The University was
o
fficially
inaugurated on 1908 with only the faculty of arts. On 1923 a decree was issued
for the formation of the Egyptian University with four faculties:
Arts, Science, Law, and Medicine. Between that time and 1935 the higher School Of Agriculture and five others
were incorporated into the
University. In 1940, the University was named Fouad 1st
University. In 1958 the University was renamed Cairo University.
Since its foundation, it has grown and prospered, and is now a flourishing place of learning and research for over 100.000 students distributed in 22 faculties and higher institutes. The University has three branch campuses in Fayoum, Beni Sweif, and Khartoum (Sudan).
The main campus of Cairo University is located at the city of Giza, a part of Greater Cairo. It is situated on the west bank of the River Nile. Giza is an ideal place for sightseeing. One of its attraction is the amount of historic places. The famous Giza Pyramids and Sphinx are within easy reach of the University. Also the old pharaonic capital, Memphis. and Saqqara necropolis are notable sites of Giza.
