Egypt's
official name, The Arab Republic of Egypt, (A.R.E.) forms the north-east
shoulder of Africa and extends into part of south west Asia. It is bordered by
the Mediterranean in the North, The Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea to the east, the Sudan to the
south and Libya to the west. The country is comprised of 4 main natural regions:
The Nile Valley,Delta, the Western Desert, the Eastern Desert and the
Sinai Peninsula, which lies
mainly in Asia Minor. The coastline of Egypt extends for 1415 miles (565
miles along the Mediterranean and 850 miles on the Red Sea)
.
The chief lakes of
Egypt from north-west to the east are the
Maroutis, Edku, Burllus and Manzala which lie only a few miles from the coast
and are shallow and brackish. The 7 famous Natron lakes lie in a valley in the
desert, 80 miles northwest of Cairo. In the province of the Fayoum, there is
Lake Karoun, 30 miles long and 5
miles wide, forming the remains of Lake Moeris,
which Herodotus believed to have been artificially constructed.
Lake Nasser, the enormous Nile water reservoir was created behind Aswan High
Dam, it is 344 miles long.
Egypt lies in an almost rainless area, so the climate is extremely dry. The days are warm and the nights are cool. January is the coolest month (18 to 22oC). On the north coast, some rain falls during the winter months, but snow is unknown. In Sinai, snow occasionally falls during the winter, and heavy rainy storms do occur which can flood the rocky ravines for a few days.
